The Global Week Ahead
The UN General Assembly Begins in New York, Xi and Trump Hold a Three-Day Summit in Washington, Mideast Tensions Intensify, Germany Holds Tense Elections, and Markets Wait for Global PMIs
It is by any measure going to be an extraordinarily busy week. Between the 81st United Nations General Assembly bringing together more than 130 state leaders, to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s meetings in Washington with President Trump, to tensions in the Middle East now at a new inflection point, and today’s potentially historic regional elections in Germany, it would not be an overstatement to say the world will likely look quite different by week’s end. As the old saying goes, “there are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen.”
Breaking it down, on Thursday, President Xi arrives for a three-day summit with President Trump. There will be a formal state dinner and numerous scheduled discussions set between the leaders to discuss everything from the future of AI, the Iran War, numerous Indo-Pacific security issues, and finalizing trade agreements between the two nations.
We do not believe the discussions on AI and the potential national security threats to either country (or the world) will lead to any formal policy agreements. At best, we may see the announcement of a new focused track of talks and consultations between China and the US on better AI governance cooperation, but no binding agreements.
There is the possibility China will offer to step in and mediate a peace deal between the US and Iran, but we think that is unlikely. Beijing publicly urged Tehran last week to rein in Houthi threats to Red Sea commercial shipping . But because the request was viewed as non-threatening, so far, Iranian leadership has not acted on it.
On trade, markets will focus heavily on whether a 12-month trade truce— which allows rare earth mineral export to the US— will be extended. It is unclear what the US is likely to offer China for a broader set of trade concessions, but we suspect President Trump will delay future arms sales to Taiwan as a good-will gesture.
Ahead of the Xi-Trump meeting, tensions in the Middle East are reaching new highs as Houthi forces consolidate power in southern Yemen and intensify their verbal threats to seal off the Red Sea. Additionally, Houthi drones and missiles hit the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh on Saturday. While most of the missiles were destroyed by Saudi interceptors, fuel tanks at the King Khalid International Airport were hit and destroyed. The attacks were seen as a serious escalation between the Houthis and the Kingdom, raising fears a new war could break out between the two. Saudi Arabia is already suffering the loss from Houthi strikes on their transnational oil pipeline and other oil production facilities.
In an effort to advance a possible peace deal, President Trump will be meeting with Gulf leaders in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. It is anticipated the meetings will include leaders of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. Other Middle Eastern leaders may also join the meeting. Trump said last week – without providing details – that he had “spoken directly with Tehran” in a bid to hammer out a cease fire.
However, Trump also said he is in “deciding mode” about possibly launching a new set of large-scale strikes on Iran. He met with senior defense advisors over the weekend at Camp David. He went on to say “I have a big decision coming up. Do I want to go in and annihilate them or do I not?”
Trump will have an exceedingly tight schedule at the UN. He will address the General Assembly on Tuesday and will hold additional side meetings with leaders, including UK Prime Minister Andrew Burnham, Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodriquez, and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Takaichi aims to emphasize to Trump Japan’s security concerns regarding China in advance of the Xi-Trump meeting and reiterate Japan’s investment commitments to the US.
We would note it is interesting who will not be speaking at the UN General Assembly this week: Russian President Vladimir Putin is skipping the event entirely, as is Chinese President Xi Jinping, despite being in the US.
Also absent will be German Chancellor Friedrich Merz who announced late last week he was cancelling the trip to deal with the fall-out of the regional elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania today (Sunday). Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Party polls were in single digits going into today’s elections, with the far-right AfD Party looking to score another shock victory. Merz is now facing rebellion within the party and calls for him to step down as Chancellor (which is unlikely to happen). However, Merz is likely to move to sooth internal tensions and also seek new policy shifts to blunt the growing popularity of the AfD.
Looking at the global economic and financial radar screen, aside from the significant geopolitical issues and risks presenting themselves this week, markets will be looking at global September flash PMIs coming out on Wednesday.
Breaking it down by region, in the US, beyond the PMI print on Wednesday, we will see new home sale figures out on Thursday and the durable goods print on Friday. Also on Friday we will get the latest University of Michigan Consumer Survey.
In Asia, China’s 1-year and 5-year loan prime rates are set on Monday.
And in Europe, Germany’s Ifo survey is out on Thursday and consumer confidence numbers on Friday. France releases its business confidence and consumer confidence numbers on Thursday. And the UK releases their consumer confidence report on Friday. Additionally, the central banks of Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland decide on interest rates, all on Thursday.
