The Global Week Ahead

EU Defense Ministers and NATO Foreign Ministers Meet on Ukraine Peace Talks, Putin Goes to India, Canadian Prime Minister Carney May Come to Washington,  and Markets Brace for a Data-Heavy Week

November 30 - December 7, 2025

Efforts to reach a peace deal with Russia over their war against Ukraine will dominate the geopolitical agenda this week.  EU Defense Ministers will gather in Brussels on Monday to talk about President Trump’s amended peace plan – this comes after Ukrainian officials met with US officials in Miami, Florida, to try to hammer out final but critical aspects of a plan constructed by the US, Ukraine, and EU following Trump’s initial 28-point plan two weeks ago.

While EU defense ministers are expected to focus on how to further support Ukraine’s military defense,  NATO foreign ministers will gather in Brussels on Wednesday, where the focus will again be on the ongoing negotiations.  However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to skip the meeting, sending Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau in his place.  Rubio’s absence is seen as unusual, especially with the tight timelines of the negotiations with Russia. No formal reason has been given.

While all this is going on, Russian President Vladimir Putin will be traveling to India for meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to shore up relations between the two nations.  The visit comes following President Trump’s demands for India to stop buying Russian oil, which is being used to finance the war in Ukraine.  Putin describes the planned summit as one that underscores the “privileged strategic partnership” between the two countries.   It also shows how dependent Russia is now on Indian oil purchases to finance the war.

Finally, there appears to be a good chance Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will come to Washington, DC, this week for talks with President Trump over the ongoing trade dispute between the two countries.  Technically, Carney would be coming for the FIFA World Cup team drawing announcement for the upcoming World Cu,p which is being played in Canada, the US, and Mexico.  But talks on the sidelines with Trump are expected.

Looking at the global economic and finance radar screen this week, it is going to be a heavy week of economic and financial reporting.

In the US, the University of Michigan survey for December is out on Friday, while the ISM indices for manufacturing are out on Monday and services on Wednesday.  Markets will also see delayed September indicators for industrial production out on Wednesday.   The Federal Reserve Board has gone into its “quiet period” before the Federal Open Market Committee meeting on interest rates on December 10th.  But Fed Chair Jay Powell will be giving short remarks at a commemorative event for former Secretary of State George Shultz, while Vice Chair Michelle Bowman will be testifying before the House Financial Services Committee and the Senate Banking Committee this week on regulatory issues.

Turning to Europe, CPIs will be out for the Eurozone, Germany, France, Switzerland, and Sweden.  Markets will be watching closely for any uptick in inflation.

In Asia this week, China releases its official PMIs on Sunday, and non-official PMIs are out on Wednesday.  And Japan’s Ministry of Finance’s Q3 Financial Statements Statistics are out on Sunday.

Below is the rest of our detailed report of the major geopolitical and geoeconomic events in the coming week:
