American Voters Go to the Polls, US-Iran Military Tensions Rise Again, Israeli Political Parties Vie to Form a Ruling Coalition, and Markets Focus on More Central Bank Decisions and Major Corporate Earnings
November 1 - 8, 2026
For American voters, election day finally arrives on Tuesday. After months of intense campaigning and a constant and growing bombardment of political advertisements, voters will decide on all 425 seats in the US House of Representatives, 35 of the 100 Senate seats, 36 governor seats, 6,139 state legislative seats, and 33 mayoral elections in the top-100 most populous US cities.
The election has become a referendum on President Trump’s policies and performance, mostly because he has asked voters to make it so. In campaign event after campaign event, the President has said, “Close your eyes and pretend I’m on the ballot.” With polls showing the President’s approval level in the mid-30 percent range and Republicans looking at bleak congressional and senatorial polling, too, the President may end up regretting the challenge.
As of Sunday afternoon, prediction markets and most polls suggest 70 percent odds Democrats take control of the House of Representatives and 60 percent odds Democrats win control of the Senate. Democratic Senate candidates are proving to be either ahead or even in polls in the otherwise Republican strongholds of Iowa, Alaska, Ohio, Kansas and Texas (while being far ahead in North Carolina) – all told, this being more than enough seats to win control (they need a net four seat pick-up to win control of the Senate).
Meanwhile, President Trump is suggesting he is considering another major military escalation with Iran after the midterms. A third US Naval aircraft carrier group (the USS Theodore Roosevelt) has arrived in the region, and Trump has said he has held discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on what the two countries could and should do to force Iran back to the negotiating table.
There are reports that Iran is seeking to potentially reopen negotiations via talks with other Gulf States. However, President Trump has said he is “not in that much of a hurry” to make a peace deal.
All this takes place as Israel is locked into formal coalition talks following last week’s elections which produced no clear winner. Netanyahu is seeking to pull yet another political rabbit out of his hat and form a new government – which would be his seventh term as Prime Minister and further extend his tenure as Israel’s longest serving prime minister - despite not getting a majority in last week’s elections.
His opponent, retired General Gadi Eisenkot, is also seeking to hammer out a big enough coalition to take power. Coalition forming in Israel is highly complex and unpredictable. But it formally starts Wednesday when Israeli President Issac Herzog begins consultations with both Netanyahu and Eisenkot to decide which of the two political leaders should be given the first official mandate to form a coalition. Whoever gets the mandate from Herzog gets 28 days – plus a possible 24-day extension – to build a government. If they fail, the other side gets their chance to form a government.
Looking at the global financial and economic radar screen, markets will continue to focus on potential central bank action (Australia, UK, Sweden, Norway, Brazil, and Mexico) and another heavy corporate earnings schedule.
In the US, the state of the jobs market will be the big focus this week. The October jobs reports is out on Friday and comes after the JOLTS report is released on Tuesday and the October ADP report comes out Wednesday. Markets will also get the October ISM indices – manufacturing report on Monday and services on Wednesday. And the week will be capped off with Q3 productivity numbers of Thursday and the Univeristy of Michigan sentiment index on Friday.
Also this week the Bank of Mexico and the Central Bank of Brazil meet on interest rates.
In Asia, The Reserve Bank of Australia meets on interest rates on Tuesday. China’s manufacturing figures are out Monday and Services numbers on Wednesday. Japan’s wage figures are out on Thursday.
In Europe, the Bank of England and the Central Banks of Norway and Sweden meet this week on interest rates. Germany releases retail sales numbers Monday, factory orders on Thursday, and Industrial production figures on Friday.
