Financial Regulatory Week Ahead
The House of Representatives Is Out On Vacation For August and the Senate Is About to Join Them, The Crypto Bill Is Stuck, and Will the Last Regulator Around Please Turn Out the Lights for the Rest of the Month?
August 3 - 7, 2026
Washington got pretty quiet this past week when the House of Representatives adjourned for the August recess. And it is going to get even quieter at the end of this week when the Senate leaves for its break.
There is some hope there will be a breakthrough on the CLARITY Act this week, but we are skeptical. Senate Democrats are not budging from their position demanding tougher ethics provisions (aimed at President Trump and his family's crypto business). Plus, there are several Republicans – including Senator Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) – who are "highly resistant" to moving the bill in its current form.
Plus, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-South Dakota) already has a busy week of bills to deal with, none more important than securing a Continuing Resolution (CR) to keep the government open until December. Thus, it's pretty clear to us the CLARITY Act is about to slide into an already crowded September line-up of "must-do " bills.
There is one congressional hearing of note happening this week – the Senate Banking Committee is holding a hearing looking at ways of helping unlock more capital for "Main Street." SIFMA CEO Ken Bentsen, Sullivan & Cromwell Partner Dalia Bass, and Mike Bass from the US Chamber of Commerce's Center for Capital Markets Competitiveness will testify.
Beyond that, there is not much going on at the regulatory agencies this week. There are no events of note being hosted by trade associations or think tanks, either. What few things we could find happening in the financial regulatory space are below. Let us know if you have any questions.
