Historic Elections in Israel and Brazil, China Holds 5th Plenum — Further Consolidating Xi Jinping’s Power, A Big Week for Central Banks, and Almost 40% of S&P 500 Report Earnings
It will be an extremely busy and important week, politically and for financial markets.
Two major elections are being held this week in Israel and Brazil. The Israeli parliamentary elections on Tuesday will decide the fate of Israel’s longest-serving Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. All 120 seats in the Israeli Knesset are up, and the latest polls show the coalition led by Netanyahu and the Likud Party is behind but very close to the opposition National Unity coalition led by former Israeli military chief Gadi Eisenkot.
Determining the ultimate winner could take weeks as both candidates will need to form a complex coalition to win a 61-seat majority needed to form a government. And whatever coalition is ultimately formed will likely be quite fragile, as any number of issues could shatter it.
Meanwhile, Brazil’s incumbent president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (Lula), won a stunning come-from-behind victory over Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro had won the most votes in the October 4th election but fell short of the 50 percent threshold required for victory, and polls had shown him slightly ahead and likely to win. But a determined Lula surged in the final three weeks on the campaign trail and found more than 10 million new votes, gaining ground across the entire map, particularly in major cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In the end, Lula won 51.8% of the vote to Bolsonaro’s 48.2%, making him Brazil’s first four-time president.
Also over the weekend, Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado returned home for the first time after more than a year in exile. Her unexpected return puts new pressure on the current Venezuelan government – and the U.S. – to speed up a democratic transition and hold national elections. Machado has called for elections by July 2027, and polling suggests she would likely defeat interim leader Delcy Rodríguez, whom the Trump administration installed after capturing President Nicolás Maduro in January. The Trump administration has told various foreign leaders it did not support or assist Machado’s return. The U.S. had previously blocked her return but this time they decided not to intervene, as she entered the country via Colombia.
In Beijing, China, this week, the Central Committee will hold its Fifth Plenum. The focus of the meeting is finding ways to strengthen Communist Party governance – which is widely seen as further tightening President Xi Jinping’s power. The meeting takes place with a number of vacancies – only 75% of the committee seats are currently filled, making this the lowest-attended plenum ever. This comes as a result of Xi’s aggressive purging of the Central Committee ranks as part of his broader anti-corruption drive. The upshot of the meeting is Xi will further lock down a fourth five-year term as president, while making clear there is no heir apparent.
Also this week, the G20 Foreign Ministers gather in Atlanta, Georgia. The meeting will be hosted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and comes as pressure on Ukraine by President Trump has reached new highs and the US and Iran appear to be gearing up for renewed fighting after next week’s US midterm elections.
We are also closely watching the EU-Canada Summit being held this week in Montreal. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is seeking to further build on discussions with the European Union about Canada becoming an associate EU member by the end of 2027, an ambitious timeline. The summit follows Carney’s speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg last month, where the idea of associate membership was first floated. This week’s summit will also seek to cement new agreements on mutual economic security, critical minerals, technology, energy and defense.
Turning to the global economic and financial radar screen, it is a big week for central banks and for corporate earnings.
The Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, the Bank of Canada, the Bank of Japan, and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand all meet on interest rates.
Regionally, the U.S. Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meets Tuesday and announces rates on Wednesday. Also in the U.S., the Conference Board’s October Consumer Confidence survey and durable goods orders are out on Tuesday, and Q3 GDP and September PCE on Thursday.
The Bank of Canada decision on rates comes out on Wednesday, with August and preliminary September GDP on Friday.
Asia will see a busy week. The Bank of Japan’s interest rate decision and October’s Tokyo CPI print are out on Friday. South Korea’s Q3 GDP is out on Tuesday, Taiwan’s Q3 GDP is out on Friday, and China’s October NBS Manufacturing PMI is on Saturday.
In Europe, the UK Chancellor John Healey presents the Labor Government’s budget on Wednesday. The European Central Bank announces rates policy on Thursday. Also this week, we will see Germany’s October Ifo on Monday and October CPIs for Eurozone, Germany, France, and Italy on Friday.
This will be a packed earnings week globally. Nearly 40 percent of the S&P 500 report this week. Markets will be focused on a number of industrial and tech reports, including SK Hynix, Samsung Electronics and Intel.
