The Global Week Ahead

March 19 - 26, 2023

This week will be hectic across the geopolitical and geoeconomics spectrum. First, the markets have been on edge all weekend, awaiting a resolution for the faltering Credit Suisse, which, at the time of this note being written, looks like UBS is going to buy CS for $3 billion.

On the geopolitical front, on Monday, Chinese President Xi Jinping travels to Moscow for three days of meetings where he is expected to call for a truce between Russia and Ukraine. The Chinese foreign minister spoke to the Ukrainian foreign minister about this idea last week – let’s see if President Putin will accept it and where the China-Russia relationship is going (will China announce they are going to give military aid to Russia if Ukraine does not agree to a cease-fire?). While Xi is in Moscow, Japan’s Prime Kishida meets with Indian Prime Minister Modi – both members of the Quad (the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue) – to discuss the Ukraine War, China risk, and the upcoming G7 meeting India is chairing.

The UK Parliament is set to vote on the Northern Ireland agreement with the EU on Wednesday. And on Sunday, Brazilian President Lula begins a large trade mission to China amidst rumors he is considering joining China’s Belt-and-Road Initiative.

The European Council (heads of state) will meet this week twice – first in Sweden and then in Brussels, where the Ukraine War will be the top priority issue discussed. Meanwhile, President Biden makes his first official visit to Canada to discuss the Ukraine War with Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and find ways to strengthen the USMCA trade deal. On Thursday, the CEO of TikTok will testify in front of a congressional committee as Congress continues to consider legislation banning the app from being used in the US – a position we believe the Biden Administration supports.

But the most significant action this week will be among central banks. The US Federal Reserve Open Market Committee meets to consider raising or lowering rates (viewpoints are all over the place). Other central banks considering rate increases this week include the UK, Switzerland, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Nigeria.

Describing the relationship between the two countries as having “no limits,” Xi is expected to propose a truce in the Ukraine War which comes after the foreign ministers of Ukraine and China spoke earlier this week about a possible peace agreement.

· Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visits India to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Both nations are members of the Quad and are expected to focus on the Ukraine War, China, and the upcoming G7 meeting (which India is chairing).

· Germany’s Education Minister, Betinna Stark-Watzinger, begins a three-day visit to Taiwan. She will not meet with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen out of concern of angering China.

· Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan will travel to Moscow for meetings with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. They will discuss the situation in the Lachin corridor and the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.

· The EU will host the International Donors’ Conference entitled “Together for the People of Türkiye and Syria” in Brussels. The Conference will discuss how best to help in the wake of the devastating earthquakes.

· The EU Foreign Affairs Council will meet to discuss the Ukraine War, and exchange views on Tunisia and other issues.

· The EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council meets in Brussels to discuss the agricultural market situation, trade-related issues in the wake of the Ukraine War, a “New Deal for Pollinators,” and other issues.

· The French Parliament will likely hold a no-confidence vote over the Prime Minister’s use of special constitutional powers to force through controversial pension reforms without parliamentary consent.

· The UK hosts a conference on war crimes in Ukraine.

· UK university workers will walk out on strike over pay.

The Global Week Ahead

March 12 - 19, 2023

This week, Washington will be buzzing about the Federal Reserve and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) moves to seize Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank and the decision to make all depositors whole. Key members of Congress were briefed on Friday and Saturday. We understand regulators met around the clock this weekend to set up a new lending facility for any bank currently stressed with a one-year term compared with 90 days at the discount window. There remain a lot of questions at the time of this writing as to how many banks will likely take part in the program.

On the geopolitical front, President Biden will host a meeting of the AUKUS in San Diego, California. The AUKUS Pact is the joint defense group consisting of the US, UK, and Australia established to counter Chinese military advancements in the Indo-Pacific. The big news likely to come out of the meeting is President Biden is expected to announce the US will sell nuclear submarines to Australia.

Also, this week, the Black Sea Grain Initiative is set to expire on Saturday. Initially negotiated between Ukraine and Russia, it allows the free flow of grain and fertilizers out of the Black Sea and to markets globally – particularly to Africa and the Middle East, which are the primary buyers. If an extension is not granted, global markets will likely see a significant spike in food prices, and global food security issues will be considerably raised.

On the global economic agenda this week, the European Central Bank will meet and likely raise rates again. US CPI will be reported, while the Bank of Japan will release minutes from last week's meeting.

The Global Week Ahead

March 5 - 12, 2023

Events in China will be center stage this week. China’s People’s National Congress, composed of more than 5,000 Party members, will officially confirm President Xi Jinping as President and also select a new Premier. Additionally, the Party will ratify a series of institutional reforms.

EU President Ursula von der Leyen will visit Canada early in the week to discuss Canada’s ability to supply the EU with critical minerals. She will then travel to Washington, DC, to meet with President Biden. They will discuss Ukraine and the ongoing tensions between the US and EU over the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act and its impact on the EU’s electric vehicle industry.

Also, this week, the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will meet to discuss Iran’s nuclear program. IAEA Secretary-General Raphael Grossi held unexpected meetings with senior Iranian officials in Tehran on Friday in an effort to persuade Iran to reverse course on rapidly developing a nuclear weapons program.

Markets will also be focused on Federal Reserve Board Chair Jay Powell’s testimony before Congress this week. The US jobs report will also be front and center later this week.

Japan’s Central Bank will also meet this week to consider interest rate increases. It will be the last meeting of BoJ Governor Haruhiko Kuroda before stepping down. We expect the Japanese Diet (Parliament) to confirm Governor-nominee Kazuo Ueda and two new Deputy Governors, Ryozo Himino and Shinichi Uchida.

· The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will meet in Vienna, Austria. It is expected they will discuss IAEA’s Director-General Rafael Grossi’s meeting last week, with the Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Mohammad Eslami, in Tehran, Iran. IAEA) has confirmed that traces of highly enriched uranium particles, up to 84 percent, were recently found in Iran. This is the closest Iran has gotten to reaching the 90 percent threshold required for weapons-grade nuclear fuel.

· The UN Security Council is scheduled to hold a briefing, followed by consultations, on the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for South Sudan and Head of UNMISS, Nicholas Haysom, will brief reporters at the Security Council Stakeout after the Security Council meeting on South Sudan. In the afternoon, the Security Council is scheduled to hold a briefing on the Middle East, followed by consultations on the Middle East (Syria).

The Global Week Ahead

February 26 - March 5, 2023

This week, Ukraine and China will dominate the geopolitical calendar. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visits the White House for talks on Ukraine on Friday while G20 Foreign Ministers meet in India to discuss the Ukraine War, food security, and other pressing issues. The meeting is likely to be quite tense as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has confirmed he will be in attendance.

China will be holding the National People’s Congress later this week, where a host of new government appointments will be made, including the new Chinese Premier, the Finance Minister, and the Governor of the People’s Bank of China, among others. We will also see Beijing unveil new policies to energize the economy post-COVID along with its 2023 budget.

Global markets this week will be looking at key economic data releases in China, Japan, the EU, and the US. US data releases this week. China PMIs, EU CPIs, and US consumer confidence are most in focus. In Japan, the candidates for Governor and the two Deputy Governors of the Bank of Japan have confirmation hearings in the Upper House of the Japanese Parliament this week. They are likely to be quickly confirmed.

The new Chinese Premier is expected to be announced, and it is likely to be Li Qiang, a member of the Politburo Standing Committee. The Global Week Ahead

February 19 - 26, 2023

This Friday marks the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. To mark this tragedy, President Biden will visit Poland for two days as a sign of support for Ukraine and NATO. Additionally, the UN General Assembly will meet to discuss the war while the UN Security Council will attempt to move a motion condemning Russia’s action (which Russia will likely veto). Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky may travel to New York to address the assembled delegates. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin will address the nation on Tuesday, two days before Russia celebrates Defense of the Fatherland Day.

On the economic front, the G-20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Chiefs will meet in Bengaluru, India. Closer to home, the US will report GDP figures on Tuesday while the Federal Reserve releases minutes from its last interest rate meeting. Finally, there are a number of central banks considering interest rate hikes this week, including Turkey, Israel, Argentina, and South Korea.
