The Global Week Ahead

Brazil Holds Presidential Elections The EU Trade Chief Holds “Super Crucial” Meetings with His Chinese Counterpart in Beijing, Watching India’s Interest Rate Decision, and Markets Await FOMC and ECB Minutes

October 4 - 11, 2026

It will be a relatively quiet week geopolitically when compared to the months of non-stop high impact events and meetings.  The big event of the week is the presidential elections in Brazil today (Sunday).  Brazilians are voting for a president, all 27 governors, 54 of the 81 Senate seats, and the full 513-seat Chamber of Deputies. Going into the election today, the polls had been razor-close and today’s results show the polls were for the most part correct: As of this evening and with 99% of votes counted and reported, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro has won just over 47% of the vote to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Lula) with 44.9% of the vote and Escritor Agusto Cury coming in with 2.9%  - all of which means Brazil is heading into a run-off vote on October 25th.

This has been a highly contentious campaign.  Bolsonaro, a close ally of President Trump and son of the embattled and imprisoned former president, Jair Bolsonaro, has promised to crack down on criminal gangs and to strike a new trade deal with the US. Lula who is running in his seventh presidential campaign, has been at odds with Trump over trade and multiple foreign policy issues.  But Lula enjoys a strong base of supporters who credit him with improving their lives through his social policies.  Watch for a politically intensified atmosphere in Brazil over the next three weeks – which is saying something considering how intense the race has been up to this point – and markets may react to growing political uncertainty.

Also this week, EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic travels to Beijing for what he has termed “super crucial meetings”  with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao. The EU and China have been locked in tough trade talks for months and political pressure from EU capitals is growing to finalize a deal in advance of an October 15th EU leaders meeting in Brussels.  The EU essentially has taken a stand that they can no longer tolerate a flood of Chinese goods into Europe, especially Chinese autos, which are putting intense pressure on domestic manufacturers and has forced the closing of plants and mass layoffs (for example, Volkswagen recently announced plans to lay off more than 50,000 workers and close four plants.)  The EU markets are effectively being flooded with Chinese goods fueling a €1 billion-a-day increase in the trade deficit with China.

Looking at the Middle East this week, there appears to be little movement on any new peace talks between the US and Iran.  But there will be a meeting in Saudi Arabia this week between the defense and foreign ministers of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, along with their respective military chiefs of staff, to discuss how to move forward with the recently announced Mecca Joint Defense Agreement.  On the agenda is how to deal with recent Houthi escalations out of Yemen aimed at cutting off commercial shipping in the Red Sea and attacking the Saudi east-west oil pipeline and various oil production facilities.

Looking at the global economic and financial radar screen, other major events of the week will be the release of the Fed’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes on Wednesday and the release of the European Central Bank’s rate setting meeting minutes.

In both instances, markets are watching closely for indications of how both central banks are anticipating the threat of inflation risks, especially in Europe.

In the US, the big economic indicator reports being released are the September ISM services index on Monday and the University of Michigan’s October survey on Friday gauging consumer sentiment.

In Asia this week, markets are closely watching the Reserve Bank of India’s rate setting decision as the country continues to grapple with inflation risk because of the Iran War and its impact on oil and exports.  Japan’s August labor cash earnings are out on Wednesday, and the September Economy Watchers survey is out on Thursday, with the August household spending figures being released on Friday.

In Europe, Germany’s August factory orders are out on Tuesday, industrial production on Wednesday, and trade balances on Thursday.  France releases industrial production numbers on Tuesday and Italy releases its industrial production numbers on Friday.  The Bank of England will publish its Bank Liabilities and Credit Conditions surveys on Thursday.

Below is everything else we are tracking around the world in the coming week:
